Financial Centre of Excellence

Brook Green has recently become a Financial Centre of Excellence.

This was achieved through the PSHEE and Maths Departments working together to design a series of lessons that focused on money recognition.  Work was undertaken with Year 10 and 11 students in and  outside of class focused on money.

Year 10 students were given shopping lists and had to purchase the right goods and calculate the correct change.

Year 11 students were given a challenge to organise, budget, and undertake a trip.

The evaluation feedback praised us for using  "real life teaching opportunities" with our students.  The school was also praised for embedding financial education throughout the curriculum.  This was only possible through both departments closely working and planning together.

The school was also supported through visits from Santander who delivered several sessions including Moneywise workshops.

The team are scheduled to pick up the Award at the Centre for Excellence Conference held in Birmingham on the 14th of November.

Mr Walters Head of Maths said "This is a great example of Departments working together to develop a coherent and joined up curriculum that helps our students on their learning pathways."

Hamlet Theatre Visit – Thursday 8th February 2018

Watching a 3hour 15min live performance, all in Shakespearian language, would challenge the best of us but not our amazing Arts Award students! They were completely hooked from the start by this contemporary directed performance of Hamlet by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The students described the performance as ‘taking their breath away’, as well as ‘tense’, ‘moving’ and ‘outstanding’.

Following their exhilarating experience, and to finish off their perfect day, one of our lucky students had the unique opportunity to pose for a photograph with one of the actors.

All that is left for me to add is wow, what a memorable, uplifting day!

Our Star Awards 2016

Every year Plymouth City Council recognise the talents of their staff from across the city at a glittering award ceremony on the Hoe. This year we had three members of staff recognised for their amazing work with the young people of BGCFL.

Congratulation to Mr Glanville for his nomination in the 'Plymouth City Council's Got Talent Award' for utilising his talents and ability to the benefit of our students even though it often falls outside of his role he is there for them.

Congratulations also go to Mr Spree and Mrs Wenmoth for their nominations in the 'School Staff Star Award' this recognises individuals who have demonstrated dedication and commitment to the service they provide to the school and its students. They were nominated because they provide outstanding support and are dedicated to their role.

We are incredibly lucky to have such a talented team of staff at BGCFL who always go the extra mile for our students and School community - a big thank you from all of us.

At the Annual Governor Awards 2016 Mike Thomas our Chair of Governors and Denise Rogers our Clerk to Governors were both recognised for their outstanding work and commitment to governance.

Denise received the Dedication to Clerking Award for her commitment to supporting and guiding the board of Governors over the last 9 years. It is a role that is often underestimated in its responsibility and Denise is tireless in her drive to ensure our Board of Governors are up to date, informed and challenged.

Mike received the inaugural Ann McDonald Award for Special School Governance. Mike has been a governor at Hillside as it was and now Brook Green for 20 years. This is a very special award and we are extremely proud of Mike and thank him for his commitment to ensuring young people with SEND achieve the best that they can with the best support they can have in an outstanding school.

Congratulations to them both.
