Battle of the Somme 2016
On Tuesday 5th July ten of our Year 9 students went to Exeter to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. They had the opportunity to visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum to view the original Battle of the Somme 1916 film and then to Northernhay Garden to view the art installation entitled ’19,240 Shrouds of the Somme’.
Each of the 19,240 British soldiers who died during the first day of the battle was represented by a 12 inch figure, wrapped and bound in a hand-stitched shroud and arranged in rows on the ground.
Our students had the unique opportunity to see the original propaganda British film and almost 100 years on, understand the impact that those deaths had on their family and friends.
