World Book Day 2017

Yet again Mrs Moore surpassed herself with the planning and organisation of World Book Day activities for Thursday 2nd March 2017!  Students enjoyed two very different activities linked to their learning.  KS3 students visited the Victorian mining experience that is Morwellham Quay!  They journeyed 100 metres underground on the mining train to experience the George and Charlotte Copper Mine.  They boarded the sailing ketch Garlandstone to discover the way of life at sea during Victorian times and how hard it was.  They also attired themselves in Victorian costumes and learned about how to dress a Victorian boy and girl.  The chocolate experience was a delight for all the sweet-toothed fans and they learnt about the history of chocolate as well as making their own chocolate lolly to take home!  This visit was linked to our Victorian Day back in 2016 as well as English and Humanities.  We all agreed that it was an amazing day out and many students requested that we go back as soon as possible!

KS4 students were treated to games of laser-tag after watching and reading The Hunger Games.  It was a competitive afternoon for both students and members of staff.  They discovered power-ups to shield themselves, the invisibility mode and the powerful ‘machine-gun' mode.  They learnt the nature of survival in a high-powered simulation.  Students wore a body vest with sensors and lights on it.  They used a laser rifle and some students assumed the role of 'sniper'.  The day was linked to English and their GCSE where students have been studying the theme of 'human endurance and survival'.   Students worked both in teams and also for the best individual score.  It further enhanced their social skills as they worked and interacted with students who they do not normally work with. At the end of the day there was a buzz around school from both students and staff who had had an amazing time!
