On Friday 15th March Engineering pupils from year nine joined pupils from years ten and eleven for the school’s first STEM day. The day started with an assembly and a talk from Jonathan Firmin, owner of Nimrif RC Models, Plympton. Jonathan has manufactured, developed and raced models since the age of four and can frequently be found racing one of his many models.
Before break, pupils participated in three lessons; One, using maths to calculate speed, another, using science, to investigate the effectiveness of solar power and the other, using technology, to understand about flow diagrams & sequencing. After break pupils were split in groups of about five, given a model kit to assemble and asked to produce a wall display about their model. Using team work and support from adults each group managed to make model, present information about how they made their moving car, robot or toy. The information used skills and knowledge gained in the morning.
