Ignite, Engage and Inspire
Since 2011 Claire Summers,
a local dance practitioner has worked in school one day a
week with the students facilitating dance in both group and one to
one sessions. Claire, one of 5 practitioners working in Plymouth Dance,
on the Ignite, Engage and Inspire project which takes dance to
special needs schools in the Plymouth area. The project is funded by The
Big Lottery, Reaching Communities fund. IEI is a joint £300,000 project
with Plymouth dance and Attack Dance and is the biggest investment that the Lottery
has made to a disabled/educational project. The work of the practitioners
is being closely monitored from beginning to end by four researchers (from the
departments of Health, Education and Psychology) from Plymouth University.
The researchers are studying the impact of the dance sessions
on the students including changes in physical and mental health.

We hope the project will hopefully continue for several more years as we are
currently applying for further funds, because
of the success of the project to date.
The project will possibly also create other similar projects to run
along side it, including a 'home practitioner and a physio/dance
- A dance practitioner who will visit young people in their homes and
teach family members similar easy to follow routines to support the pupil
whilst at home during periods of sickness/holiday etc.
- A dance/physiotherapy project which will research how physio exercise
can be incorporated into dance routines/structures.
