Plymouth Raiders triumph over London Lions in home victory 23/09/2018

Davis Howard of Plymouth Raiders has a shot blocked by Ladarius Tabb of London Lions.

The Plymouth Raiders dominated the London Lions, in a fantastic show of squad play, to win the side’s first game of the 2018 BBL season, 95-88.

Playing from behind for a large portion of the game, the Raiders rallied at the right time to overcome a nine-point deficit, to secure, extend, then hold the win, playing off strong defence and timely shooting to win over a strong Lion squad fresh off a victory of their own.

Brook Green students accompanied by Brook Green staff attended the Raiders clinic prior to experiencing the game.

It was an amazing experience enjoyed by all it was very tense at times with students covering their faces saying I cannot watch due to it being a very close game.

The students were a credit to Brook Green and their families with impeccable behaviour.

Financial Centre of Excellence

Brook Green has recently become a Financial Centre of Excellence.

This was achieved through the PSHEE and Maths Departments working together to design a series of lessons that focused on money recognition.  Work was undertaken with Year 10 and 11 students in and  outside of class focused on money.

Year 10 students were given shopping lists and had to purchase the right goods and calculate the correct change.

Year 11 students were given a challenge to organise, budget, and undertake a trip.

The evaluation feedback praised us for using  "real life teaching opportunities" with our students.  The school was also praised for embedding financial education throughout the curriculum.  This was only possible through both departments closely working and planning together.

The school was also supported through visits from Santander who delivered several sessions including Moneywise workshops.

The team are scheduled to pick up the Award at the Centre for Excellence Conference held in Birmingham on the 14th of November.

Mr Walters Head of Maths said "This is a great example of Departments working together to develop a coherent and joined up curriculum that helps our students on their learning pathways."

Mike acknowledged the need for good GCSEs as a requirement to work in the Port.  He also said the group needed skills like teamwork and communication were vital along with an interest in ships.

AB Ports manage a number of ports around the country the Plymouth site is used by Brittany Ferries who is the port's biggest customer.  The group behaved so well that we have been given details to visit another AB Port in Teignmouth which will be happening in the near future.
