10JSP used Maths to measure wind speeds using an anemometer. Students learnt about the different units used to measure the wind and why they were important. There was a lot of discussion around if the wind is stronger the higher up you go. Pippa experimented with wind speed on a swing to see if it was faster swinging backwards or forwards. Students also used a GPS monitor to plot the positions for taking the wind measurements and we used the waypoint markings to return to the same point later in the day to see if the wind speed had increased or decreased. It was great way to put maths to practical purposes and use it outside of the classroom.
