Each year Brook Green spends a whole day celebrating all things Mathematical. This year’s Numeracy day was on the 5th July. Many different activities are offered to our students. The day shows us how much we use Mathematics in everyday life and how interesting the subject can be. Most of all it brings Mathematics to life in a fun an interesting way.
Year 10 students spent the day orienteering, putting their knowledge of bearings, angles and distance to the test.
Year 9 students took part in a Mathseye day. This is a national initiative that sees students visiting the city centre and seeing just how much Maths they can find. This can be in percentage reductions in shop prices, shapes in architecture or simple price lists for example.
Year 7 and 8 students took part in several different sessions. These involved solving match stick problems using tree branches, making strong and stable structures using toothpicks and marshmallows and other activities designed to be fun and educational.
Feedback from the students is very positive and the Maths department is already looking forward to our day in the sun next year.
