Brook Green Year 10 Explore the Shadows of Bodmin Jail

Year 10 students from Brook Green stepped back in time this week as they visited Bodmin Jail—one of Cornwall’s most atmospheric and historic landmarks. The trip was designed to enhance their Gothic literacy skills in English, and it certainly delivered an unforgettable experience.

Learning Through Experience

Bodmin Jail, with its cold stone corridors, towering walls, and haunting past, provided the perfect real-world example. Built in the 18th century and known for its dramatic history, the jail offered students an authentic look at the type of environment often described in Gothic texts.

During the visit, students were able to:

  • Walk through the original cells and execution areas

  • Hear stories of former inmates

  • Discover the harsh realities of Victorian punishment

  • Explore the immersive museum displays and exhibitions

These experiences allowed students to make strong links between the physical environment and the Gothic descriptions they encounter in literature.
