As part of their English curriculum, our Year 8 students are currently reading War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. To bring the story to life, students visited the historic War Horse Valley Farm—the very setting that inspired the novel.
During the trip, students explored the farm’s rich history and its connections to World War I. They met and fed Joey the horse, along with other animals, gaining insight into rural life during wartime. A highlight of the visit was experiencing recreated WW1 trenches, complete with realistic sounds of shell and gunfire, which helped students understand the challenges faced by soldiers.
The day concluded with a tractor ride around the farm, where students encountered more animals and learned about the vital role of farming during the war. This immersive experience deepened their understanding of both the novel and the historical period it represents.
We are proud to offer such enriching opportunities that connect classroom learning with real-world experiences!
